Virtual S’mores Event June 20
What better way to celebrate the beginning of Summer than by a campfire roasting marshmallows with our friends and family. Since we can’t get together, we are hosting a virtual event instead!
We encourage our patrons to join us as we make s’mores quarantine style. Some of you may microwave them or use your oven, some of you might have a grill or a fire pit. We encourage you to join us no matter your method to share in a Summertime tradition and spread some love.
Meeting ID: 776 7070 1212
6 of the Get Outside Summer Reading Challenge activities consist of finding Geocaches.
Learn what Geocaching is and how to do it. You never know what they will look like, or what is inside! Happy hunting!
Botetourt County Libraries StoryWalk®
Location: Botetourt Sports Complex Walking Track
Available: Starting June 1, 2020
What is a StoryWalk®?
StoryWalk® is an innovative and delightful way for children -and adults- to enjoy reading and the outdoors at the same time. StoryWalk® is a series of signs featuring sequential pages of a children’s picture book.
The StoryWalk® Project was created by Anne Ferguson and developed in cooperation with the Kellogg Hubbard Library and the Vermont Bicycle & Pedestrian Coalition.
What will you see on your walk?
Our StoryWalk® is much more than just a picture book. We have incorporated guided questions to help you and your child connect to the story. There are physical fitness challenges throughout the walk, which have been modified for all skill levels, to keep you and your family active together. Our talented team has also captured the natural beauty of Botetourt for you to see along the way with facts to feed your brain.
How to use the StoryWalk®
Use the StoryWalk® to connect with yourself and your family.
- Start at the beginning, located on the fencing to the right of the main entrance of the Botetourt Sports Complex.
- Follow the pages around the track.
- Pages will rotate between book pages, physical fitness challenges and local wildlife facts.
Know that you are going to walk more than one lap?
- Read the book pages during your first lap (warm-up).
- Complete the physical fitness challenges on your second lap (workout).
- Enjoy the local wildlife pages on your third lap (cool-down).
What is this month’s book?
Scribble Stones written and illustrated by Diane Alber
Scribble Stones is a fun story that starts off with a happy little stone who dreams of being something amazing, but ends up being just a dull paperweight. On his journey, he meets Scribble and Splatter, who desperately need his help when they run out of paper. With teamwork and creativity, they create the Scribble Stone Art Project. This project is about collaborative stone art that invites friends, family, classmates and even strangers to work together to spread happiness by creating art!
When will the book change and what will it be?
We are planning to switch the story out in July, but do not have an exact date on when that will happen. We are still discussing our next steps based upon how this month goes. We do know that the next book will be Art & Max by David Wiesner.
Will there be more StoryWalks® closer to my library branch?
We sure do hope so! The Botetourt Sports Complex is our first official StoryWalk. We will base our next efforts upon the community response we see this Summer. We have many ideas, but also want to hear from you. If you like what you see this Summer, contact firstname.lastname@example.org to discuss future projects.
Take Home Crafts
Crafts will be released on Mondays. Parents can print instructions online and do craft with supplies at home OR they can call and reserve a bag. We supply everything but the paint, scissors, glue or tape.
This program is made possible through the fundraising efforts of our Friends of the Library groups and donations from our community and the Mid Atlantic Library Alliance. Thank you for your continued support.
Due to the strain on businesses right now, the Botetourt County Public Libraries have decided that this year, WE will be supporting our small businesses. We could not do that without the amazing support from our Friends of the Library groups.
